一、Natural environment and historical evolution
Zhanggong District lies in the south of Jiangxi province, located in 114 ° 46 '40 "E~115 ° 3' 40"E, 25 ° 40 '16 "N - 25 ° 58' 56"N. It is the political, economic, cultural, transportation and informational center of Ganzhou, as well as the location of the Party Committee and the government of Ganzhou. It covers a total area of 425.5 square kilometers, governing six towns, four sub district offices, 66 administrative villages, 43 neighborhood committees and 10 town residential committees. By the end of 2005, the total population of the district was 478,000. Zhanggong District resides in a hilly and a slightly saddle-shaped terrain which tilts from the higher part of southeast and northwest to the lower central part. The climate of the district is of humid subtropical monsoon kind, with four distinctive seasons, abundant rainfall and sunshine. The city is surrounded by rivers on three sides, and rests against mountains on the fourth side. It has beautiful sceneries, with the Zhang Jiang River and the Gong Jiang River merging into the Ganjiang River under the ancient wall which can be dated back to the Song dynasty, thus the name “first city along the thousand-li Ganjiang River".
Zhanggong District boasts a long history of about 2,200 years since the set up of the county in the Han dynasty (201 BC). It has been a place of strategic importance in the south of the Changjiang River since ancient times, joining Hunan, Fujian, Guangdong provinces, and has been the governmental location of various levels of administration. In the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, "Ganzhou was the trading center of China, with merchants gathering and goods pouring from all parts of the country". And now, it is one of the 36 big cities and one of the 44 economic centers in China. Natural landscapes and places of historical interest can be found here and there in the district, relics of the Song dynasty in particular, thus the praise “the Museum for the Song dynasty".
二、Celebrities in history
Zhanggong District is a place which has nurtured talents generation after generation, and many celebrities in history once visited here. In the Tang dynasty, the famous poets Meng Haoran, Zuan Wuqian, etc left their footprints here and made poems. At the end of the Tang dynasty, Lu Guangchou ruled the region, and expanded the old city. In the North Song dynasty, Kong Zonghan had the old soil-walled city replaced with a stone-walled one, and built the famous Octagonal Gate Tower; Sushi came to Ganzhou twice, leaving behind many poems and anecdotes; Zhou Dunyi, who was the first to give open lectures in Ganzhou, founded his fundamental principles of the idealist philosophy here with his disciples Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, which had a far-reaching impact on later generations. In the South Song dynasty, Wen Tianxiang was put in charge of Ganzhou, and organized a local troop to fight against the invasion of the Yuan dynasty. When Xin Qiji came to Ganzhou, he wrote the famous poem "Pusa Mann—scripts on the Xizaokou Wall ". Poets Huang Tingjian and Yang Wanli also visited Ganzhou, leaving behind their famous poems here. In the Ming dynasty, Xie Jin paid his respects to the Shouliang Temple, and wrote "Inscription on the Tablet in Shouliang Temple for the Resurgence of the Nation"; Wang Yangming once presided over an argumentation in Tongtian Rock, which further promoted the academic atmosphere of idealist philosophy and had a great impact on the culture of Ganzhou. The profound cultural foundations nurtured and fostered a large number of outstanding local talents, among them were the prominent figure Yang Xiaoben, poet Zengji, Number One Scholar Chi Mengli of the Song dynasty, Liu Chengzhi, Xie Shao, Deng Yuanchang in the Qing dynasty, and Yang Liyuan, Chen Xie and Chen Rui in the Republic of China, etc.
三、Economic development
Fast-growing Industry. By now, there are 29 categories of industries in the district, including metallurgy, machinery, paper-making, chemical industry, food processing, electronics, etc. In recent years, the local government spares no efforts in promoting the development of industry. As a result, industry in the district has been growing continuously and has become a leading force in promoting economic growth of the district. Five leading industries have been established, namely, nonferrous metallurgy, machinery manufacturing, modern light textile, food pharmaceutical, and information & communication. In 2005, the gross industrial production made by enterprises which are district- or above-facilitated reached 3.512 billion Yuan, with a tax revenue of 395 million Yuan. The construction of Shahe Industrial Zone is going on smoothly and rapidly, and is gradually gaining impetus. In 2004, Shahe Industrial Zone was approved as the provincial science and technology zone run by private citizens and the provincial electromechanical industry zone of Jiangxi province. It was also awarded the title “Provincial Model Industrial Zone” in terms of attracting investments from overseas, and “the Most Profitable Industrial Zone of Ganzhou”, and “Model Industrial Zone of Jiangxi Province” in 2005.
Steadily-developing Agriculture and Rural Economy. The local government holds on that the development of agriculture should be similar to that of industry, and makes every effort in promoting the development of rural cooperative economic organizations and leading industrialized agricultural enterprises. By means of the development of leading industrialized agricultural enterprises, orders agriculture, and demonstration bases, the structure of agricultural industry has been adjusted and perfected. So far, production bases of vegetable, fruit, aquatic products, livestock breeding, and a pollution-free agricultural production base have been set up successively, and a number of agricultural product processing enterprises have been nurtured. As a result, the efficiency in agriculture has been improved and the incomes of farmers increased, especially since the construction of a New Socialist Countryside in 2004, there has appeared a new atmosphere in the rural region, and farmes’ living standard has been improved considerably.
Fairly-developed Business and Trade. Up to now, there are more than 50 wholesale trade markets of all kinds in the district, with a total market area of over 700 thousand square meters (ranked first for the area per capita in Jiangxi Province) and a business volume of more than 10 billion Yuan. Zhanggong District has now become a commodity collecting and distributing center which radiates more than 30 neighboring counties and cities of Jiangxi, Guangdong, Fujian and Hunan provinces. A market system with developed networks and a wide coverage has primarily established.
四、Rural Economy
Zhanggong District have six towns under administration, with 66 villages, 72,500 mu of cultivated land ( 1 mu=0.0667 hectares), and an rural population of about 128,000. In recent years, the guiding principle of "serve the city and melt into urban area” has been stuck to. By means of adjusting the structure of agriculture and promoting the industrialization of agriculture, the overall economic efficiency of agriculture has been further enhanced, and the serving function of agriculture to the city has become more prominent. In 2005, the agricultural GDP reached 479 million Yuan, and farmers’ net income 3,437 Yuan per capita, an annual increase of 7.6% and 4.5% respectively during the nation’s Tenth Economic Five-Year Plan period. Currently, vegetable and livestock have become two leading agricultural industries, and flower and nursery stock, taro, mushroom, seedless watermelon, and breeding of special types have become five region-specific agricultural industries. There are a number of leading district-level industrialized agricultural enterprises, such as Jiangxi Yangshan Camellia Oil Development Co. Ltd., Fangying Poultry and Food Co. Ltd., Shahe Wulong Taro Processing Factory, Cattle Village Salt Food Product Factory, Ganzhou Livestock Market, etc, and many renowned brands of agricultural products have been established, such as Huada Poultry Industry, Ziyuan Vegetable Oil, Guandao Salt Food Products, Cattle Village Salt Food Products, Gannan Hakkas Salted Ducks, etc. The circulation in agricultural product markets within the district is active, the annual turnover of the Hubian Livestock Market and Wulong vegetable wholesale market amounting to 138 million Yuan. There are over 30 leading agricultural product processing enterprises whose annual output exceeds 3 million, among which are two provincial-level leading enterprises and three city-level leading enterprises. 102 rural cooperative economic organizations of all kinds have been set up in the district with a membership of over 10,600, serving more than 2,000 households of farmers.
五、Social Undertakings
The social undertakings of our district is flourishing .Zhanggong District has been awarded a number of titles, such as “National Health City”, “National model Green City”, “National model City for Special Education”, “National model City for Culture”, “National Cradle for Athletics”, and “National Model City for Comprehensive administration of Social Security”, etc, and has been on the list of the first cities which have met the nation's "two basics" standard in education. In recent years, the strategy of "rejuvenating the country through science and education" has been put into effect, and the district has been on the list of "the Experimental County/District/City on Scientific Development in Jiangxi Province." The principle that rural compulsory education at county level is always given priority has been reinforced; as a result, the effect of universal compulsory education is consolidated, and the distribution of primary and secondary schools has become more reasonable. The government has found an effective way of carrying out ideological and moral education for the underage of the district, and was awarded “National Model Experimental District for Moral Education” in 2005. Meanwhile, due to continuous efforts that have been done in the construction of National Demonstration Zone for Community Health Services, Zhanggong District has been awarded the title “National Demonstration Zone for Community Health Services”. The mass sport activities in our district have been promoted, and the sports level enhanced. The policy of “family planning” has been adhered to, and the natural population growth rate is controlled within 0.728%. A new rural cooperative medical care system has been implemented, and Zhanggong District is the first in Jiangxi province to establish a system to guarantee the minimum livelihood of rural landless people. Democracy process has been promoted smoothly and the construction of the legal system has reached a higher level.
六、Nationality and Religion
According to the 2005 survey, there are 27 national minorities with about 3,000 people dispersed in the district, such as the She, Hui, Man, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uygur, Zhuang, Miao nationalities. There are three She village groups, including 213 households, and more than 1,900 people. The Party's religious policy has been abided by, and a system of “district- town-village three-level network and the town-village two-level responsibility” has been established. By the end of 2005, there are three religions in our district, namely, Buddhism, Christianity, and Taoism, with more than 9,800 religious believers and 55 priests. Among them more than 2,400 are Buddhists, with 40 Buddhist monks and nuns; more than 7,400 are Christians with 10 priests; More than 50 are Taoist believers, together with 5 Taoist priests. There are 23 venues for religious activities, five for Buddhist activities, and 18 for Christianity. |
